You know that something is wrong when dirty laundry is being washed outside the house. Case in hand: the humongous lie that is called animal testing. Laundry washed:  a team of Canadian scientists publish a new meta analysis in PLoS Medicine and reach the conclusion that less than 5% of promising basic science discoveries that claim clinical relevance lead to approved drugs within a decade, partly because of flawed pre-clinical animal research. To remedy this predicament the McGill team urges the life sciences community to adopt a list of 26 guidelines and 55 in order to improve the quality of such experimentation procedures. Regardless of whether their original intention is purely methodological (improve the horrendously poor work ethics of their peers), or ethical (sparing the "sacrificed" animals), one can only hope that all parties involved in the process of creating and disseminating scientific data, particularly funding elements and journal editors, will swiftly adopt the suggested modifications.
