Dana Adini - Ashlaya (2011)
The best testimony to the quality of an artist is the product
coming out of her hands when collaborating with others. The flaming lips'
latest effort provides such a golden opportunity. I must admit I'm not a
card-carrying member of FL's fan club but I was deeply intrigued upon reading
the A-list of collaborators featured there. The opener promised a great deal,
as it marked a drastic change in their sound. That is always welcomed,
especially to a band known to dabble extensively with tedious, pretentious, and
narcissistic self-importance. However, as ordinality dictates, the second,
third, fourth, and the rest of the tracks soon followed. Oh, the calamity! What could be said about FL
now that Ke$ha (!!) has landed them their best track ever? Ke$ha!!! Not even
Nick Cave was able to draw FL so far out of their comfort zone (which is
anything but comfortable to everybody else). Kodus to FL for reaching out to
Ke$ha & Biz Markie, but unfortunately it may very well prove to be their
most unfortunate decision ever. I don't know how cynical was their choice of Ke$ha,
but she sure did took them to school.

If you thought that Dr. Caligari caanot make the abomination baby
of Rammstein and Army of lovers... think again. This sorta thang can only
happen in Europe, home of Eurotrash and Eurovision. Now, these guys obviously
have a well-developed sense of humor, i'll give 'em that, but there's a fine
line between self-awareness fooling around and cynical exploitation of
audience's ignorant attraction to the formulative. Their entire body of work is
to be despised for either accounts, but this new song is not so bad. It's like a watered down vegan version of Patton (plus it's a cute vid).
